I just installed SS2005 all components including the workstation components
and samples etc. I go to Start -> Programs -> Microsoft SS2005 Group ->
Documentation and Tutorials -> Samples ->
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Samples
I get: "Error 1606. Could not access network location=:."
I need to be able to launch BIDS. I do not have the short cut in Microsoft
SS2005 Program Group.
Any ideas?

What's the Edition of your SQL Server 2005? If it's Express Edition, then
there is no BIDS in that package.
If it's Workgroup, Standard, Dev etc. then you may not be selected it from
the Components to Install window and so it may not be installed. Because its
shortcut would appear in the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 folder in the Start
menu but you say it does not appear. So something is wrong. Ensure you
installed it first.

|||Thank You for the reply. I installed SQL Server 2005 Enterprise and Applied
SP1 and SP2. I double checked by uninstalling Workstation COmponents on the
instance I had installed earlier. I went ahead and re-installed the
workstation components again. I get BIDS and everything else, but I could
not get rid of the Samples Network error
"Error 1606. Could not access network location=:." when I launch Samples
from the SS2005 Program Group.
I get the same error when trying ~/Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server 2005\90\
Tools\Samples\SQLServerSamples.msi;
I already installed all the databases manually all (AdventureWorks (OLTP),
AdventureWorksDW (data warehouse), Adventure Works DW(OLAP) sample databases),
but i am trying to figure out why this error occurs and how to get rid of it.
I need to install another instance on a different server, and I do not want
to spend the time doing things manually when the SQLServerSamples.msi should
do all that in a flash.
I appreciate any input here.

|||When you were installing SQL Server, in the Components to Install window,
it's not enough to check "Workstation components, Books Online and
development tools". To install BIDS and sample databases you should click
the Advanced button in the same window and go to "Documentation, samples and
sample databases" click on the disk icon and select "Entire feature will be
installed on local hard drive" to make sample databases installed. And you
should be ensure BIDS is going to be installed in the same Feature Selection
window under the Client Tools.
Regarding to the error about the access to network location, where did you
download the SQLServerSamples.msi package? If you downloaded it from the
following link:
http://www.codeplex.com/SqlServerSamples/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseId=8389
It would be the SQL Server 2008' s samples and would be installed to the
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Samples\" folder by default.
If the above info does not help and you already done that stuff then, I'll
ask you to tell me the problem clearer. Is your problem with the absence of
BIDS, or reaching to the content of samples that you installed using
SQLServerSamples.msi?
Also, your Operation System is Windows Server 2003, right?

When I reinstaled things my BIDS short cut showes up now and I can Launch
BIDS without any problems.
I did not download the SQLServerSamples.msi from anywhere. That was Included
in the dowload files from the cd. Is there a place where I can download maybe
a fesh SQLServerSamples.msi copy. Is there a chance that The SQLServerSamples.
msi is corrupt and where would I dounload the 2005 from?
