ErrorLog size limit
Hi.
I have a service on a server which contains Sql Server Express.
this service adds documents to the database to allow full text search features.
From some reason, the index crashes and than it writes to the ErrorLog file, the errorlog jumps to 20GB(!) causing the server to crash.
How can :
1. limit the size of the error log.
2. find out why the log jumps to this size (I can't open the error log file ofcourse...)
Thanks!
hi,
if you are refererring to transaction log you can you the alter database command
GO
ALTER DATABASE [Northwind] MODIFY FILE ( NAME = N'Northwind_log', MAXSIZE = 1024000KB )
GO
Regards,

errorlog monitoring & job outputs
Considering email is setup, how would you send emails by scanning errorlog for any issues. Also, how to send program outputs using email.
Thanks...nobody has this kind of setup?|||Which mail, setup how?
-PatP|||email setup to send emails from SQL Server.|||Need more info from ya, Mkalsi...you can use xp_sendmail to do it...I have things setup to do what I THINK you are trying to do...

I have SQL 2000 with sp3. I can't recycle the errorlog. I have already
tried sp_cycle_errorlog and it does not do it. The errorlog is up to
300 MB. Any suggestions short of stopping/starting SQL ?
Raziq.

No idea. It should be immediate. Do you check your file size in Explorer or
SQL EM?

Ensure that your ERRORLOG.* files do _not_ have read only attribute set.

Incase if you are not restarting the SQL Server service or restaring the
server then probably monthly you can schedule a SQL Agent job to run the
command sp_cycle_errorlog to create a new log file. This will help you to
open the log file faster when required.
Thanks
