Estimating hardware requirements for a SQL Server 2005 installation

Is there any good online documentation describing rules of thumb for estimating and planning a SQL Server 2005 deployment in support of a Windows rich client/WCF services architecture?

TIA,

Ian
Well you do not want to hear that answer, but it depends. It′s like asking, How much gas will I need when I travel from NYC to Seattle. Well that depends on how much data / luggage will be transported, which transport device you use, how much data will be retrieved, how often you will query the database, how many users will access the database, etc. There are many parameters to consider.

Errow whilst initializing report server!

I have an urgent problem which I hope someone can help me with.
After installation, I was told by the wizard that I needed to initialize the report server manually...
So I went to:
http://uacl-sql2/reports
It redirects to:
http://uacl-sql2/reports/Pages/Folder.aspx
And I get the following error:
An internal error occurred on the report server. See the error log for more details. (rsInternalError) Get Online Help The system cannot find the file specified.
Does anyone know how to fix this...I have ensured that my Reports folder allows everyone to have full access...so I do not believe it is a security issue'?
Help!

*****************************************I can only think that you may have to use rsactivate (a command line utility
installed with Reporting Services). The syntax would be:
rsactivate -m RSServerName -u Username -p Password.
where username and password is the Windows account with admin priveleges to
the Reporting Services Service. This command would be run on the dbserver.
If this does not work you may need to use rsconfig (another installed
command line tool) prior to using rsactivate. rsconfig sets the connection
to the ReportServer database and the options can be viewed with rsconfig /?.
This should add the symetric keys in and activate or initialize the server.
Hope this helps.

I would check the ReportServer service on the Report Server through
Administrative Tools\Services to see if it is started. If not, try to start
it and record any errors. Also, check to see if that service is set to logon
at NT Authority\NetworkService on the Log On ta in the properties of the
ReportServer Service itself. You may need to reinstall and one of the
options during install is how you want the service to start. Have you tried
rsconfig on the Report Server? Also, I assume that the Report Server and
ReportServer database are on the same system (from the name you specified in
the URL it appears to be the case but I am only assuming)?

The rsconfig appeares to run fine. The service is also running fine, however I changed the login details to be an administrator, and restarted it....
Something odd i did notice in the logs was the same error I get when attempting to initialize the report server i.e. The system cannot find the file specified.
I have pasted the log details below...any ideas?

Error-Unable to get report parameters:Unable to access Web Service

Hi - In our RS + SP1 installation on Windows Server 2003, we recently began
to get the following error:
"Unable to get report parameters: Unable to access Web Service: The request
failed with HTTP status 403: Forbidden."
We are calling Render() in code using an account which has admin rights to
the RS box, is not locked out, etc. Event logs show no failures and the RS
logs are as useless as ever. I see no access denieds from Windows auditing
either.
Thoughts?
thanks muchHi,
Thanks for your posting!
From your descriptions, I understood that you are not able to access Web
Service with the error message "Unable to get report parameters: Unable to
access Web Service: The request failed with HTTP status 403: Forbidden."
Have I understood you? Correct me if I was wrong.
Based on my knowledge, it seems that "anonymous" for Reportserver virual
folder is enabled. Please try the following steps and let me know whether
it works
1. Right click ReportServer in IIS->Properties->Directory Security
2. Make sure "Intergrated Windows authentication" is checked and "enable
anonymouse access" is unchecked.
Thank you for your patience and corporation. If you have any questions or
concerns, don't hesitate to let me know. We are always here to be of
assistance!

By chance, I tried to execute http://server/reportserver/reportservice.asmx
and it said that there were no permissions to execute scripts in this virtual
root. Sure enough, I looked at the ReportServer virtual root config and the
Execute permissions were improperly set. Not sure how changed, but once I
put it back to "Scripts and Executables" I was good.
Thanks much

Errors on Datasource.aspx page

I have an installation of RS 2000 on a Win 2003 server.
I've started getting an error whenever I access the Data Source pages
using the Report Manager.
The page loads OK. But I cannot make any changes. For example, if I try
to change the "Connect Using" options from "Windows Integrated
Secuirty" to "Credentials stored securely ...", the radio button shows
the selection, but the required text boxes are not enabled, In the
bottom left corener of the IE status bar, "Error on Page" flashes.
The server log files and event logs show nothing regarding the error.
This happens on all Data Source pages on this server.

Any ideas?

It sounds like some of the javascript files are missing. Try reregistering asp.net client files by running aspnet_regiis -c from \windows\microsoft.net\framework\v1.1.4322.

ERROR: The cabinet file 'Sql.cab' required for this installation is corrupt and cannot be used

As the title indicates, I'm having this error during installation. It occurs when I try to install
the "Management Studio" part of the program. I've tried a bunch of things like
copying to hard drive and installing, but to no avail. To isolate the problem, i've even tried removing Reporting services, since at the time of failure it seems to be trying to install/configure the Microsoft.Reporting Services dll.

Additionally, I have SQL Express installed (installed it separately, not as part of the SQL 2005 DVD), VS 2005, .NET Framework 2.0, SQL Management Studio Express CTP. Could the Management Studio Express be causing a problem?

Please note:
Although the error is about missing / corrupt Sql.cab, I have searched the entire dvd for the said file, but there is no file called Sql.cab on the dvd. Am I missing something?

Any solution would be greatly appreciated.

TIA

We don't support Management Studio Express and Management Studio side by side on the same box. Remove Management Studio Express and I bet you'll be OK.

Alternate theory, if that doesn't work: possibly your media is corrupt, as the error message says.

Hi Paul,

By installling SQL 2005 , I detected the same error.

Is there any solution for it ?

Thanks in advance

|||Same Problem on the Sql2005 32bit developer cd. It trys to find dtserver.exe off of the sql.cab file and its not found. This is on an installed sql 2005 server, that is sp1 when I go back and try to install the integration services.|||

The exact error message I get when trying to install the services are:

Integration services install
Product version 9.00.1399.06

The File 'msdtssrvr.exe. cannot be installed because the file cannot be found in cabinet file 'sql.cab'. This could indicate a network error, an error reading from the cd-rom, or a problem with this package.

The cabinet file 'sql.cab; required for this installation is corrupt and cannot be used. This could indicate a network error, an error reading from the cd-rom, or a problem with this package.

Does anyone have suggestions? The only other point of interest is that this sql server is running on a Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2. The OS running is Windows 2003R2 enterprise sp1.

I've also gone back and tried to install after copying the cd to the virtual server.

|||

Resolved!...

I decided to try a command line install of the components i wanted to add..

start /wait setup.exe ADDLOCAL=SQL_Engine INSTANCENAME=MSSQLSERVER UPGRADE=SQL_Engine SKUUPGRADE=1 /qb

That did not apparently help me, so I started searching the install cd for other options...

I ended up going to the install disc into the setup folder and running SqlRun_DTS.msi. It generated one error, apparently not fatal, continued and then allowed me to install the integration services off of the CD.

I've also reapplied the Sql2005 SP1 since I can't even run an csv file import without it ;)

Hope this helps others.

|||

That sounds encouraging. I'll give it a spin and post back with my results. If someone else tries it please post back too.

Update:
Hmm still no juice. I tried to run the SqlRun_Tools.msi (that's where the problem was) and this is what I'm now getting...

"A component that you have specified in the ADD_LOCAL property is already installed. To upgrade the existing component, refer to the template.ini and set the UPGRADE property to the name of the component."

I have absolutely no idea where or what template.ini is. I have also removed all SQL Express items (i.e. SQL Express Management Studio, SQL Express Books Online, SQL Express - the server).

Hi people,

I have been having this problem and I believe this issue stems from the fact that we are all trying to install from either a virtual CD/DVD loaded from an ISO image or a CD/DVD drive shared across the network or the CD/DVD contents have been copied to a directory on the server itself.

The solution?

The only way I have gotten a trouble free installation of SQL 2005 is to do it from a CD/DVD drive directly connected to the server on which you want to have SQL installed to.

I am surprised that it is not possible to install SQL from a virtual CD drive with an ISO file, some of our servers have a temporary CD/DVD drive attached when making the base OS install which is then removed when fitting into the rack.

Can't believe this behaviour is by design.

Anyhow thought I would share my experiences with SQL installations thus far, hopefully it will help someone.

Does anyone have suggestions? The only other point of interest is that this sql server is running on a Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2. The OS running is Windows 2003R2 enterprise sp1.

I've also gone back and tried to install after copying the cd to the virtual server.

|||

Hope this helps others.

|||

I installed them from the Enterprise Edition DVD. Just insert a different cd when doing the install and choosing that for the other components.|||

ERROR: The cabinet file ''Sql.cab'' required for this installation is corrupt and cannot be
