Estimated Execution Plan Fails, XML Error?

Good afternoon, all. Whenever I try to use Query | Display Estimated
Execution Plan in SQL Studio on any non-trivial query, I get this unhelpful
message:
Error processing execution plan results. The error message is:
There is an error in XML document (1, 501).
There is an unclosed literal string. Line 1, position 501.
The only suggestion I've heard of is to instal SQL SPs, but that didn't
help. This is SQL 2K5 running on Win2K3. I don't believe there's any
strangeness like odd characters in instance names, and all language settings
are default. I've seen this before on another server, but Google has nothing.
Any ideas? Thanks!
I think I heard that the XML used for this can not handle some unusual
object names, but at best that is a long shot.

Establishing connection from SQL MMC fails

Hi,
I have Win2003 and SQL server 2000 installed. I have restarted SQL services
and the services crashed and could not be killed. I have killed the
processes manually but when I open SQL Server Enterprise Manager, expand SQL
Server group and click on the desired SQL Server group it is failing and the
MMC becomes not responding.
It fails on 'Establing connection to SQL Server and checking Windows
security'
I have tried to telnet on the respective SQL Server port and the port
responds ok. I have also done a netstat and the server is listening on the
respective port.
From the sql error logs, the following information is being logged
2007-09-26 16:45:04.32 spid8 63 transactions rolled forward in database
'msdb' (4)
2007-09-26 16:45:34.04 spid5 Starting up database 'tempdb'

Your suggetions will be highly appreciated.Dear Quintin,
Thank you for posting here.
From the problem description, I understand that the error message
"Establish connection to SQL Server and checking Windows security" is
encountered when trying to connect to the SQL Server 2000 via the
Enterprise Manage. If I have misunderstood about your concern, feel free to
let me know.
Before moving on, I suggest that you try the following method to check if
you could connect via osql.exe
1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK
2. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER.
OSQL -E -S <server name>\<instance name>
OSQL -E -S tcp:<computer name>,<port number>
Also, you could try SQL authentication by using sa
OSQL -S <server name>\<instance name> -Usa -P<password>
3. Please check if we can successfully connect to the instance of SQL
Server 2000 by using osql.exe.
If any error message appears, please let me know the extract error message
we received.
Please also help me gather the following information for the further
research:
Information One: SQL MPS Report
=====================Please help create a MPSReport on the problematic machine, which will
collect ERRORLOG, Windows event log and other helpful information about the
SQL Server. To create a MPSReport, please visit the following web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=CEBF3C7C-7CA5-408F-
88B7-F9C79B7306C0&displaylang=en
And look for MPSRPT_SQL.EXE. Download it and run it on the machine. Dismiss
the prompted dialog boxes and the readme window (usually a Notepad) after
you read them. After the Command Prompt window closes itself, collect the
cab file the tool has generated and sent it to me.
Information Two: Screenshot
=====================Please also help me to capture a screenshot when the error message
"Establish connection to SQL Server and checking Windows security" appears.
1. When the error appears, please press the Print Screen key (PrtScn) on
your keyboard.
2. Click Start, click Run, type MSPAINT, and click OK.
3. In Paint, click Paste under the Edit Menu, click Save under the File
menu, type a file name for the snap shot, choose JPEG as "Save as type",
click "Desktop" on the left pane, and click Save.
Please send above files to me at v-adamqu@.microsoft.com
If anything is unclear in my post, please don't hesitate to let me know and
I will be glad to help. Thank you for your efforts and time.
Have a nice day!

Errors on importing a text file

When a DTS fails on a Text Source input with an error like "DTS_Transformation encountered an invalid data value for 'Column1' destination"

Is there a way to get the line number of the textfile where the import failed? It is hard to determine where in my 40,000-line file it found the invalid value for my column.

Thanks,
AndrewSpecify the LOG file in Package Properties/Logging.|||WHere does it store the logs on the server?|||Wherever you would like it to be.|||I set the error log file to a text file on my esktop - it seems to repeat the same error message (without the line number) - am i missing something?

Hi Edward,

It looks like as if I have dbo_Prescription table in my data source View.

I will check it out tomorrow morning and i will get back to you.

Thank you for your time.

Ronald

|||

Hi Edward, In my data source view i have the dbo.Prescription table not dbo_Prescription.

Do these namings really matter.

Ronald

|||

The naming is really important. Without you specifying names correctly Analysis Server has no idea how to construct a valid SQL query.

Edward,

In My data source view, I have the dbo.Prescription table. You know dbo.Prescription and dbo.PatientDiagnosis are my fact tables. I have failed to understand this since i have these two tables in my data source view.

Please help out.

Is this connected with SQL SERVER 2005 service pack1.

Errors in connecting Visual Fox Pro as linked server in 2005 - HEL

I can set up a linked server to a FoxPro DB in SQL 2000 but it fails when
trying to set up the linked server in 2005. I know the MS site says something
about leaking memory with the linked server but I don't even get a link that
works.
Here is what happens in a Win2003Server, SQLServer2005, latest VFPOLEDB from
MS site environment.
1) If I try to create a linked server from the management studio, it says:
'(null)' is an invalid product name. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 15429).
There are only three fields to fill out and product name is not required when
I try to make the linked server in 2000.
2) If I use a SQL command to create the linked server, I can make it without
the product name but it does not work in 2005 but does in 2000.
sp_addlinkedserver 'SERVER1', '', 'VFPOLEDB', 'c:\company.dbc'
Looking for thoughts on how to troubleshoot this!!

Think I am closer now. It turns out that MDAC 2.8 SP2 for Windows Server 2003
is not showing VFPOLEDB as a component when I run the component checker. I
have tried regsvr32 to register the dll but no luck. Thoughts on how to get
MDAC to recognize this OLE DB provider?

|||Hi Doug,
As you know, the FoxPro and Visual FoxPro OLE DB data provider is not
installed with MDAC. For the record, it's downloadable from
msdn.microsoft.com/downloads/updates. If you already have it you might want
to verify that you've got the latest version.
Here's what works for me in SQL 2005 using the Linked Server dialog:
Providers list: VFPOLEDB shows as an entry
Linked Servers > New Linked Server ...
Linked Server: MyLinkedServer
Provider: Choose "Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Visual FoxPro
Product name: Visual FoxPro (I think this is optional)
Data source: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual
FoxPro9\Samples\Northwind\Northwind.dbc" (Include quotes since there's
spaces in the string.)
Provider string: VFPOLEDB.1
Location: (blank)
Catalog: (blank)
Security page and Server Options page take defaults.
